Houmt Souk, the capital of Djerba

Around Dar Ines — Midoun, island of Djerba

Houmt Souk is Djerba’s main town, its market and historic heart. You wander a whitewashed medina between lively souks, old caravanserais and café terraces.

The medina and the souks

The medina’s lanes hold the souks: spices, silver jewellery, pottery, fabrics and basketry, in a lively atmosphere. It is the place to bring back an authentic souvenir of the island.

The old fondouks (caravanserais) and shaded squares punctuate the stroll, between artisan shops and small fish restaurants.

The port and the forts

The fishing port sets the tone: colourful boats, sponges and the catch of the day. Nearby, the Spanish fort Borj El Kebir has watched over the coast since the 15th century.

Houmt Souk is about twenty minutes from the villa. Midoun market, closer by, is the island’s other great market gathering, especially on Fridays.
