Around Dar Ines — Midoun, island of Djerba
Djerba is first and foremost an island of beaches: over 100 km of coastline, fine sand and a shallow sea that warms up early in spring. From Dar Ines villa, in Midoun, the best of them are a few minutes’ drive away. Here is which to choose, and when.
Minutes from the villa
Yetti beach is a 6-minute drive from Dar Ines. It is a fine-sand beach with clear, shallow water for tens of metres out: children can stand for a long way, which makes it the easy outing of the stay — in the morning before the heat, or in the late afternoon.
A little further stretches Midoun’s resort strip, between Midoun and Houmt Souk, where the hotels line the shore. The beaches there are serviced: sun loungers and parasols for hire, snack bars, and water sports (jet-ski, parasailing, catamaran) for those who want some buzz.
Sidi Mahrez and Seguia, the great north-east beaches
Sidi Mahrez is the island’s best-known beach: a long ribbon of pale sand running for several kilometres along the north-east, facing a calm turquoise sea. Its width means you can find a quiet spot even in summer by walking a little beyond the hotels.
Continuing on, Seguia beach towards the north-eastern point is prized for its transparent water and sandy bottom. It is where kitesurfers and windsurfers gather when the wind picks up, mostly in spring and autumn.
The wilder beaches
To the north, the Ras Rmel peninsula — nicknamed Flamingo Island — offers a sand spit and a lagoon with no buildings at all; we devote a separate guide to it. South of Midoun, around Aghir, the coast becomes calmer and more natural, with less-visited beaches that are ideal for a quiet day.
On these unserviced beaches, bring shade (a parasol), water and something to eat: there is not always a snack bar nearby.
When to swim
The swimming season runs from May to October. In June the sea is already pleasant; in July and August it often exceeds 26 °C; September and October stay warm and are noticeably quieter, with superb light. Spring (April-May) is mild and perfect for beach walks.
In high summer, favour the morning and the end of the day: Djerba’s midday sun is strong. The southern wind (sirocco) blows a few days now and then; the villa’s private pool takes over on those days.
Practical tips
A car puts every beach within 25 minutes; Dar Ines has an enclosed garage. Public beaches are free; sun loungers on the serviced stretches are hired by the day.
After the beach, the house is minutes away: shower, pool, rooftop terrace for the sunset. It is the rhythm most of our guests settle into — sea in the morning, pool in the afternoon.
